Our Story

We were founded in 1899 in our original premises on Beaconsfield Street Acomb, we moved to our new premises on Front Street In 1970 due to an increase in memberships which at one point was over 2000.

The club has expanded the building several times to accommodate the size of membership increase, the function room increased in size, so it has a large seating capacity and more if a stand up only event is on. The games room and other areas of the club have in the last 50 years expanded too.

But one thing has remained the same and that is the beautiful symbol of the club, the Horse Chestnut tree outside our main door on Front Street.

It is a symbol of the local area and has stood there long before the club was built when the old white house and gardens were still there. A preservation order was placed on the tree in 1969. Before the present club was built, the myth was it had been filled with concrete to make it safe with it being so close to the road!

We have a large concert/function room that seats 300 people or approximately 450 standing with a fully stocked bar with an excellent range of beers & spirits.

This is available for almost any event from one off concerts/music events/sporting events/birthday celebrations & anniversaries or a wake/memorial for a departed loved one.
